LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The UMKC men’s basketball team (10-20, 5-8 WAC) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end as they fell to a hot-shooting New Mexico State (24-5, 11-2 WAC) team on the road Saturday night.

The game opened up with the Aggies sparking a 20-7 run to set the pace, connecting on 10 of their first 13 attempts from the field during the stretch. UMKC was unable to find the same shooting success in the first half, converting 10-of-30 their field goal attempts in the first 20 minutes of play.

Back to back three-pointers from sophomore guard Isaiah Ross (Davenport, Iowa) brought the Roos back to within single digits at the 10:30 mark but New Mexico State quickly responded with a 15-7 run to stretch out the lead. Ross finished the game with eight points and three rebounds in the contest.

UMKC found a spark in the final two minutes of the half as a Jordan Giles (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) jumper and Marco Smith (Kansas City, Kan.) triple trimmed the New Mexico State lead to 40-28 at the break. Giles led the team in scoring with eight points after 20 minutes of play and Smith wrapped up his evening with a team-high nine points to pair with four rebounds and an assist.

The Aggies began the second half shooting lights on the way to an 8-0 run to begin the period and would later extend their lead to 24 points with just under 12 minutes to play in regulation. UMKC struck back with a 13-3 run, including five points from freshman guard Brandon McKissic (Ferguson, Mo.), to claw back within striking distance.

The Roos’ comeback attempt would run out of steam as the Aggies continued to scorch the nets at extremely high rate. UMKC, who had trouble finding their rhythm throughout the contest in shooting 32.1% from the field and 28.6% from beyond the arc, was unable to close the gap with New Mexico State shooting 56.3% from the field, falling by a final score of 82-58.

UMKC will wrap up the 2017-18 regular season next weekend with a road contest at Chicago State on Saturday, Mar. 3. The game is set for 4:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on the WAC Digital Network free of charge.
