KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (20-10, 11-5) fell in the regular season finale, 3-1 to UTRGV (22-8, 13-3) on Saturday afternoon at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg, Texas.
UTRGV built a 1-0 lead with a 25-8 first set win, but UMKC evened the match with a 28-26 win in set two. The Roos trailed by two midway through, but a kill from Lukes, an ace from Alex Ratzlaff and a UTRGV error put Kansas City in front 12-11. UMKC went on to stretch the lead to a set-high five twice, but the Vaqueros came back to tie the set at 24-24. UMKC, though, got a block from Emma Dyer and Alicia Harrington and an ace from Harrington to take the set.
UTRGV, would quickly regain the match advantage with a 25-16 third set victory before winning the match with a 25-19 win in set four.
Melanie Brecka and Ratzlaff each had eight kills on the offensive end, with Ratzlaff adding nine digs, two assists and an ace and Brecka adding two blocks and two digs. Harrington, meanwhile, had six kills, eight digs, a block and an ace and Dyer finished with six kills, hitting .429, with five blocks and two assists.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again om Thursday when enter the WAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed to face either Grand Canyon or Seattle U at 9 p.m. CT in Bakersfield, Calif.
