EDINBURG, Texas. – The UMKC volleyball team (5-11, 1-2) dropped its opening Western Athletic Conference road match, 3-0 on Thursday night to UTRGV (8-7, 2-0) inside the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) led the Roo effort, posting a double-double with 11 kills, 11 digs and two aces, while Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.) notched a team-high 20 digs with four kills.

In the opening set, UMKC erased a 6-5 deficit with five straight points, including a pair of Harrington kills and a pair of aces from Kynnedy Myers (Rose Hill, Kan.).  UMKC went on to stretch its lead to as many as five at 17-12, but the Vaqueros battled back to reclaim the lead at 20-19.  A UTRGV error, a Harrington ace and a kill from Mikayla Martinez (Frederick, Colo.) pushed the Roos ahead once again, but the Vaqueros scored six of the final eight points to come away with the 26-24 victory.

In the second set, UMKC once again built a big lead midway through the set, this time going up 19-11 after three straight kills from Alexia Morey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and a fourth from Martinez.  UTRGV, though, rallied late in the set for the 25-23 win to go up 2-0 in the match.

UTRGV then put the match away, taking the third and final set by a score of 25-17.

In the back row, Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) chipped in 15 digs and Myers finished with 14 assists, nine digs and three aces.  Offensively, Martinez and Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) each recorded seven kills.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday when they head to Las Cruces, N.M., to take on New Mexico State at 2 p.m. CT
