KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team had a pair of seniors see their name taken in the American Softball Association 2018 draft on Wednesday. Infielder Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) was selected by Moh-BEEL USA in the seventh round while catcher Alyx Bloom (Clay Center, Kan.) was taken in the 14th round by E1 Pro Ballers.

Goodwin wrapped up a stellar four-year career with UMKC this past spring, slashing .324/.374/.500 with a career-best six home runs and 37 RBI’s. She finished second on the team with 55 hits and 29 runs scored on the year.

A three-time All-WAC selection who earned first team All-WAC honors in her final season, Goodwin finished sixth in UMKC career history with 12 home runs and sits in seventh on the list with 81 RBI’s and a .311 batting average for her career. Goodwin put the finishing touches on her final campaign with a stellar performance in the WAC Tournament, going 4 for 13 with a home run and six RBI’s in four games.

Bloom spent just one season in the program, arriving as a graduate transfer from the Grand Canyon women’s basketball team to use her final season of eligibility on the diamond for the Roos. Bloom was a two-sport athlete at Hutchinson Community College, playing both basketball and softball, prior to her stint at Grand Canyon.

The Kansas native was a key piece in the 2018 season for the Roos, joining the team as sorely needed depth to the catcher position. In 55 starts behind the plate, she slashed .277/.405/.431, boasting the team’s second-highest on-base percentage and leading the team with 22 walks. Bloom also smacked three home runs and added eight RBI’s on the season. Her tremendous year earned second team All-WAC honors, where she ranked among the top-10 in on-base percentage and led the conference in runners caught stealing.

“We’re very excited for the opportunity given to both players to play in this new league,” commented UMKC head coach Meredith Smith Neal. “We are hopeful that they will be intricate parts to the development of this league not only with their athletic talent but their amazing character as well.”
