AUSTIN, Texas – Five student-athletes competed in four events for the UMKC track and field team at the NCAA West Preliminary Round on Friday.

UMKC school record holder Lukas van der Watt (Vredenburg, South Africa) cleared 4.85 meters on his first attempt in the men's pole vault, but was unable to make it past 5.00 meters, to finish 36th overall in the event.

In the women's discus, Matia Finley (Lawrence, Kan.) nearly broke her own school record after tossing 49.57 meters on her second attempt to finish 32nd in the event. Sister Rebecca Finley (Lawrence, Kan.) also competed in the event, throwing 45.70 meters on her first attempt to finish 44th in the field of 48 student-athletes.

On the track, Remy Abrought (Kansas City, Mo.) fought until the end in the women's 100-meter hurdles, but was unable to cross the finish line in a competitive field of student-athletes.

UMKC's top performance of the day came from thrower Blake Hocking (Lawrence, Kan.) in the men's shot put. The senior's heave of 17.57 meters on his third and final throw placed him 24th overall in the event.

The NCAA West Preliminary Round will conclude for the Roos on Saturday with the men's triple jump at 1 p.m. CT and men's discus at 3 p.m. CT, when Richard Smith (Kansas City, Mo.) and Hocking will look to punch their ticket to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Championships.
