KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Senior Eric McWoods (St. Louis, Mo.) continued to be a threat for the UMKC men’s soccer team (5-8-3, 3-5 WAC), as the captain netted his 10th goal of the season – and seventh in Western Athletic Conference play – in the Roos 2-1 overtime loss at CSU Bakersfield (6-8-1, 4-3-1 WAC) on Friday night.
With his goal, McWoods is now tied for sixth all-time in the program’s single season history in the category. He also ranks in a tie for the seventh-most points (23) and fifth in shots (58) in a single season at UMKC.
The Roadrunners opened with three shots in the first 12 minutes of action before Pandelis Popgeorgiev (Budapest, Hungary), Chris Bellmann (Altdorf bei Nurnberg, Germany) and Alexis Quevedo (El Paso, Texas) each fired a shot over the next three minutes of the match. McWoods registered UMKC’s fourth shot of the match in the 29th minute, as the Roos held the 4-3 shot advantage going into the locker room.
A rocket from a Roadrunner in the 58th minute put CSU Bakersfield out in front, 1-0. Within the next minute, Pandelis tallied his second shot of the match into a defender. Junior Christian Anderaos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) collected the rebound and fired his first shot of the game, but it bounced off the hands of the Roadrunner goalkeeper and into the feet of Enric Ferrer (Barcelona, Spain).
The freshman sent the ball up in the air into the middle of the six-yard box, connecting with the top of McWoods’ head, as he buried it into the back of the net to knot the game at one-all. The Roos have tacked on at least one goal on the board in nine-consecutive matches, which is the longest streak of its kind since UMKC scored in 10-straight contests during the 2008 season.
The two teams continued to fight for the remainder of the regulation, but a shot sent just high of the crossbar in the closing seconds by the Roadrunners sent the match into overtime for just the fourth time all season for UMKC.
In the 97th minute of the match, CSU Bakersfield broke free to put one in the back of the net and take the game with the golden goal.
UMKC will play its final road match of the regular season at San Jose State this Sunday at 3 p.m. CT, before returning home to host Air Force on Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. CT.
