KANSAS CITY, Mo. – United Soccer Coaches – formerly the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) – announced on Thursday that the UMKC men’s soccer team has been recognized for its academic success during the 2016-17 school year, collecting the organization’s Team Academic Award.

“We continue to be proud of our team’s commitment to education,” commented head coach Rick Benben. “We are extremely grateful of the dedication from our academic support staff to help our guys be successful in the classroom.”

Overall, UMKC posted a 3.47 cumulative grade point average during the 2016-17 academic school year. A total of 19 student-athletes finished with at least a 3.0 GPA, while 11 of those student-athletes turned in a 3.5 GPA or better.

The Roos were one of five men’s soccer teams from the Western Athletic Conference to earn the distinction.

United Soccer Coaches annually celebrates the academic achievements of high school and college soccer teams whose student-athletes collectively demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their studies over the course of a full school year.

College Team Academic Award recipients are active members of the United Soccer Coaches College Services Program with a composite grade point of average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster during that academic school year.

UMKC continues league play tonight on the road at Houston Baptist. Kickoff between the Roos and the Huskies is slated for 7 p.m. CT.
