STILLWATER, Okla. – UMKC men's tennis (14-8) – the 2017 Western Athletic Conference champions – open the NCAA Regional against Oklahoma State (21-6) Friday at 1 p.m. CT at the Greenwood Tennis Center. The Roos are making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2013, the final year UMKC competed in the Summit League.
UMKC has won six consecutive matches to close the season, including a thrilling 4-3 victory over New Mexico State in the WAC Championship on April 30.
Airam Castellano (Gran Canaria, Spain) leads the Roos with a 14-8 record in No. 1 singles. He and doubles partner Mike Psarros (Athens, Greece) are 14-1 on the No. 1 court. Castellano was first-team All-WAC in singles and doubles while Psarros earned the honor in doubles. Psarros is 12-4 on the No. 5 singles court with eight straight victories.
Amaury Navette (Paris, France) won a thrilling tiebreaker to clinch the WAC title and has won three straight singles matches. He is 10-11 on the year. Tom Kruse (Flensburg, Germany) is 12-9 during his freshman season, including a 3-1 mark in No. 3 singles. Vinh Pham (Lenexa, Kan.) is 9-9 overall, including 8-5 in the No. 6 slot.
Kruse and Pham are 7-4 as a No. 3 doubles tandem.
For the first time in UMKC history, both the men's and women's tennis squads are headed to the NCAA Championships. The Roos women will compete Saturday at 12 p.m. CT.
