KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s soccer team kicked off the 2018 season last Friday and they now have their first road game against SIUE this Tuesday before returning home to play against Oral Roberts and Drake on Sunday and Tuesday next week.
For fans wanting to follow the Roos’ on their three game stretch, live stats will be available as well as in-game updates through the team’s Twitter account. Each game will be video streamed live through the WAC Digital Network.
About the Roos
Last time out, UMKC fell to a solid Missouri State Bears squad with a score of 3-1 to kick off the season opener.
Senior midfielder Diego Serfaty (Caracas, Venezuela) scored the Roos first goal of the season off of an attempted penalty kick late in the game last Friday.
Junior Antoine Precheur (Paris, France) and newcomer redshirt sophomore Mirko Orchi (Civitavecchia, Italy) bring style and flare to a very good defender unit. Junior goalkeeper Filippo Errico (Verona, Italy) posted five saves against the Bears, continuing his mark from last season, where he had 75 saves and a .728% save percentage while compiling four shutouts for the Roos.
Errico gained recognition for his play in 2017, earning a spot on the Honorable Mention All-WAC team.
Senior forward Pandelis Popgeorgiev (Budapest, Hungary) brings experience to the offensive front, attributing five points, three assists and 35 shots from the 2017 campaign.
The Cougars opened the 2018 season against the Memphis Tigers last Friday, resulting in a 2-2 draw. Last season, SIUE finished with a 7-10-1 (2-3) overall record in their first season in the MAC conference.
Heading into the post season, SIUE earned the No. 3 seed in last season’s conference tournament. This year’s squad is led by junior midfielder Jorge Gonzalez and senior midfielder Greg Solawa. Both players led the Cougars in the upper tier in goals last season, as Gonzalez had five goals and Solawa scored three goals.
About the Golden Eagles
Oral Roberts starts the season off with a 1-1 record, winning 1-0 against Drake in overtime for the season opener and falling to Bradley 2-1 on Sunday. Diving into the 2017 campaign, the Golden Eagles compiled a 4-11-1 (.281) record which resulted in a six game losing streak and an early exit from the Summit League conference tournament.
The Golden Eagles retain forwards Dante Brigida and Junior Chavez, who helped lead the offensive attack in the 2017 season. Brigida obtained four goals on eight shots while Chavez had two goals but with a .056 shot percentage.
About the Bulldogs
Coming off a 6-11-2 (.368) 2017 campaign, Drake University looks to gain their first win of the season after falling to Oral Roberts in overtime 1-0. Forward sophomore Leroy Enzugusi looks to build off his 2017 season, where he had five goals on 36 shots with 21 of those being on goal.
Enzugusi also earned an All-MVC Honorable Mention from his play in the 2017 campagn.
The Bulldogs return seven starters and 18 letterwinners for the 2018 season.
After next Tuesday’s matchup, the Roos will travel to Evanston, Ill. to play Northwestern on Sunday, Sep. 09 at 7 p.m. CT.
