KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s tennis team (12-9, 4-1) closed out WAC play on Sunday when they swept New Mexico State (7-14, 2-3), 7-0, at the Amy Yee Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash., to clinch the No. 2 seed for the upcoming WAC Championship.
UMKC built an early 1-0 lead in the contest, taking all three doubles points over the Aggies.
Aliona Ladutska and Grace Ball got the Roos started with a 6-3 win over Quinty Janssen and Yadira Rubio at No. 2, while Melinda Johnson and Yana Grechkina clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 1 over Rebecca Keijzerwaard and Lindsay Harlas.
Grechkina made it 2-0 in favor of the Roos with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Rubio and Johnson pushed the margin to 3-0 when she knocked-off Janssen, 6-1, 6-4.
Ladutska followed by clinching the match for the Roos and running her WAC record to a perfect 5-0 mark with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Keijzerwaard at No. 1.
In each of the squad’s other three matches, five sets were needed for the Roos with Vale taking down Arnaudova, 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 at No. 5 and Fries beating Harlas, 6-4, 4-6, 10-2 at No. 2. Ball then closed out the match with a 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 victory against Colvee at No. 6.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Apr. 20 when they head to St. Louis, Mo., to take on Saint Louis at 12:15 p.m.
