UMKC Moves to 3-1 with Win over Sugar Bears

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s tennis team (3-1) picked-up its second win of the weekend on Sunday morning when it took down Central Arkansas (2-2), 4-2, in Jonesboro, Ark.

In the match, Central Arkansas claimed the doubles point despite a 6-4 win from Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) and Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) over Pornpawee Pramethong and Marli Van Heerden. 

From the No. 2 spot, meanwhile, Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) and Grace Ball (Wichita, Kan.) dropped their match with Xylia Chunan Xiang and Amiru Shimoguchi, 6-3 and at No. 3, Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) and Ioanna Lathouri fell to QiLi Ma and Rada Manataweewat, 6-4.

In singles action, UCA went ahead 2-0 in the match when Van Heerden beat Ball 6-1, 6-2, before Grechkina cut the lead in half with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Hee-Jin Oh at No. 4.  Ladutska followed by knocking-off Pramethong, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1, tying the match and Fries then put the Roos ahead for the first time with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Xiang at No. 2.

The Roos then clinched the match when Johnson defeated Ma at No. 3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

At No. 5, Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) was in a third set with Shimoguchi with the score at 4-6, 6-1, 4-3, when the Roos clinched the match.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday when they head to Wichita, Kan., to take on UT Arlington at 4 p.m.
