KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Every student-athlete that saw playing time for the UMKC men’s basketball team (6-16) contributed points on the board in the Roos nonconference finale against Division II powerhouse William Jewell (15-4) on Tuesday evening.

It was all Brandon McKissic (Ferguson, Mo.) and Aleer Leek (Juba, South Sudan) to start the game, as the duo accounted for all 10 points for the Roos approaching the first media timeout of the game.

Both defenses stepped up, as they held each other scoreless over the next four minutes. William Jewell knocked down seven-straight treys to take a 19-point lead over the Roos. Marco Smith (Kansas City, Kan.) ended a scoring drought of nearly 11 minutes for the Roos after sinking a pair of free throws at the charity stripe.

Smith went on to force the Cardinals fifth turnover of the game, converting the steal into a bucket in the paint by Steve Dulley (Kansas City, Mo.). The Roos went on a 14-0 run and forced three turnovers over the next three minutes to chip away at the Cardinals lead.

UMKC went into the locker room on a 20-5 run, holding William Jewell without a field goal for over five minutes. The Roos went from being down by 21 points to trailing by only six after the first 20 minutes of action. Leek led the team with 10 points, while McKissic was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, including 1-for-1 from behind the 3-point arc. The freshman’s trey marked the ninth-consecutive 3-pointer over the span of five games.

A missed 3-pointer by McKissic turned into a made trey by Broderick Robinson (Grand Junction, Colo.) to cut the Cardinals lead to two. UMKC was held without a field goal for the next four minutes, allowing William Jewell to jump back out to a nine-point advantage. The Roos returned the favor, holding the Cardinals without a field goal for three minutes. Jordan Giles (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) ended the Roos scoring drought with a layup after checking back into the game and making his first appearance on the court in three games.

A pair of free throws by Isaiah Ross (Davenport, Iowa) brought UMKC back within four of the Cardinals. A put-back by Robinson ended a 10-0 run by William Jewell, before Ross returned to the free throw line for the Roos.

A layup by Robert Knar (Mundelein, Ill.) ended another scoring drought for the Roos, as all student-athletes that saw action on the court for UMKC had contributed points with just over six minutes remaining.

Bishop laid it in to give UMKC some offensive momentum to hit double-figure scoring for the fourth-consecutive game. A 3-pointer by Dulley brought the Roos back within single digits of the Cardinals with just over a minute to play.

With 30 seconds remaining, Smith banged home a 3-pointer but that wasn’t enough, as the Roos fell, 86-74. Despite the loss, UMKC’s biggest win is getting playing time out of Giles, who returned from injury and finished with 10 points. Teammates Leek, Bishop, McKissic and Robinson also hit double-figure scoring, while Robinson led the team with seven rebounds.

UMKC will conclude its longest home stand of the season this Saturday when it resumes Western Athletic Conference play against the New Mexico State Aggies. Tickets for all UMKC home games are available by visiting www.UMKCkangaroos.com or by calling 844-UMKC-FAN.
