OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The UMKC men’s golf team had three players finish inside the top-10, leading to a second-place finish in the Bill Ross Intercollegiate at the Milburn Country Club.

“Finishing second is a solid week, but it’s a little disappointing to lose this tournament,” Head Coach J.W. VanDenBorn said.  “We didn’t play our best golf in this tournament, especially today.  We were down a few shots, and there was an opportunity for us to get back when we got to the easiest holes on the course and we played them 3-over.  It’s little things that are killing us and we have to be honest with ourselves about what we have to do to get better.  At this level, it’s the small stuff that separates the really good teams from the teams that are mediocre.”

Francois Lagraulet (Bordeaux, France) paced the Roos in the event with his third straight top-six result, finishing in a tie for fourth at even par.  In the final round of play, the junior carded a 76, notching four birdies, including birdies on three of the four par-5’s.

McCain Schellhardt (Edmond, Okla.) and Sam Humphreys (Edmond, Okla.) each tied for eighth in the event, one shot behind Lagraulet at +1.  On the day, Schellhardt tallied the Roos lowest score with a 74 that featured 15 pars and a birdie on the par-3 5th.  Humphreys, meanwhile, notched a 78 with birdies on the par-4’s of Nos. 11 and 16.

Paul Foulique (Paris, France) finished as the next lowest Roo in the tournament in a tie for 15th at +2 after recording his lone birdie of the day on the opening hole, while Raphael Lapierre-Messier (Quebec, Canada) tied for 54th with a two birdie final round.

Playing as individuals, Taylor Larsen (Garden City, Kan.) tied for 24th, finishing with six birdies in the third round, including five on the front nine, while Jack Hermeston (Newcastle, England) matched him in a tie for 24th with a final round 74 highlighted by a pair of birdies.

Matthew Sieg (Osseo, Wis.), meanwhile, tied for 46th, registering three birdies over a five hole stretch on the front nine and Nick Auer (Wichita, Kan.) finished in 67th, carding birdies on Nos. 1 and 18.

As a team, the Roos finished six shots behind winner Grand Canyon, while the Lopes Vinnie Murphy was the individual medalist by three shots at -5.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Oct. 20-22 when they head to El Paso, Texas, for the Price’s “Give ‘Em 5” Invitational at the Butterfield Trail Golf Club.

“It’s a quick turnaround for us now,” VanDenBorn added.  “In a week, we will be on a plane to El Paso, where we have historically played pretty well, but we have to score the golf ball on that course.  We will try to get things cleaned up this week and get ready to go.”
