KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s soccer team (4-5-1) won their second straight game Sunday afternoon, emerging victorious over South Dakota (2-8) by a 2-0 final count. Friday night’s 4-0 win over Missouri State provided a huge confidence boost for the Roos and the team carried over its strong play into the match today.
UMKC was the better team on the field for all 90 minutes and didn’t waste any time setting the tone in the contest. Early scoring has become a trend for the team as today’s opening goal was the third game of its last four that they have tabbed a goal in the first three minutes of play.
The Roos applied instant pressure from the opening kick, instantly setting up a promising scoring attack. Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) worked her way from the left wing to the middle of the field and fired a shot from just outside the box. South Dakota keeper Parker Rytz made a brilliant diving save on the shot but was unable to secure the ball. Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.) was in perfect to position in front of the net to get a foot on the rebound, converting her sixth goal of the season at the 2:51 mark. Howard has been on an absolute tear of late, scoring three goals on the weekend.
“Lexie was phenomenal in both weekend matches,” commented head coach Chris Cissell. “Our entire team has played extremely well in these last two games and it’s great to see that effort pay off with two good wins.”
Despite the impressive play, the Roos were only able to hold a one goal lead for the remaining 40 plus minutes in the opening half. It was a lead that felt much bigger than it was, however, as the Cougars had no answers in breaking through the UMKC defense. The shutout was the team’s fourth of the season and continued a string of dominant defensive performances at home, where they have given up just one goal in four matches.
UMKC was able to extend their lead in the second half to complete the scoring on the day. In the 49th minute, it was Howard and Mothershead again who would team up on the score. Howard was able to fight off multiple defenders as she raced down the right side of the field. Her pass across the field sailed to the left wing, where Mothershead gathered the ball sent a bullet into the right side of the net. The goal at 49:58 was her third of the season and second consecutive game with a goal.
UMKC continued to assert their will as the match transpired. Time of possession was extremely lopsided in favor of the Roos, who also held an edge of 12-5 in shots and 9-5 advantage in corner kicks in the contest.
Erin Roth (Eureka, Mo.) was the scheduled starter for the match and was largely untested due to the overly effective Roos defense. She finished with two saves on the day and recorded her first shutout of the season.
“After a rough stretch we had over the last couple weeks, we as a coaching staff challenged our girls to step up their play” noted Cissell. “The lofty goals we set, including winning every period on the weekend, were not only met but exceeded. Outscoring our opponents 6-0 was a fantastic response and certainly something we are proud of.”
UMKC will attempt to extend their winning streak with a pair of road games to complete the nonconference portion of the schedule. The Roos travel to match up Illinois State on Friday, Sep. 29 at 7 p.m. CT before squaring off with Indiana State on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 12 p.m. CT. Sunday’s match will be broadcast on the WAC Digital Network free of charge and will also have Live Stats available.
