PEORIA, Ill. – Playing without their top-two leading offensive weapons in Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) and Emma Dyer (Higginsville, Mo.), the UMKC volleyball team fell 3-0 to Connecticut in the opener of the CEFCU Invitational at the Renaissance Coliseum.
“We put out a workmanlike effort for most of the match,” Head Coach Christi Posey said. “However, at end game, in all three sets, we did not find a competitive edge. We'll learn from it but it is disappointing to not have extended the match.”
In their absence, Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) carried the offensive load, as the sophomore notched a team-high 11 kills, hitting .304, with six blocks, while Mikayla Martinez added a career-high nine kills with a .333 hitting percentage and two blocks.
In the opening set, the Roos battled throughout, trailing by just two at 16-14 midway through, but the Huskies gained control late to take the set 25-19.
UConn then jumped out to a 9-6 lead in set two, but four straight by the Roos, including a kill from Brooke Jacobs (Peoria, Ill.) in her hometown matchup, gave the Roos a 10-9 advantage. UMKC pushed the lead to as many as four, including late at 22-18 after a block from Alli Schomers (Omaha, Neb.) and Sadler, but was unable to close out the set as Connecticut came back to take the set in extra points at 26-24.
In the third set, UMKC again built a lead, this time going ahead 13-10 after an ace from Mack Blatcher (Leawood, Kan.) and a Huskie error. UMKC maintained the lead for the next nine points, but Connecticut closed the set out on an 11-4 run to take the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
For the Roos, Schomers registered 18 assists, 10 digs and three blocks, while Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.) finished with 16 digs and four kills. In the back row, Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.) finished with 13 digs, while Kynnedy Myers (Rose Hill, Kan.) added eight digs and seven assists and Blatcher tallied nine digs.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they wrap-up play in the CEFCU Invitational with matches at 12:30 p.m. against host Bradley and 3:30 p.m. against South Dakota State.
