CONWAY, Ark. – The UMKC men’s soccer team (1-0) opened the 2017 slate with a 3-0 shutout victory at Central Arkansas (0-1) on Friday evening, marking the first time UMKC has opened its season with a win since the 2007 campaign.

“We were outstanding on the night,” shared head coach Rick Benben. “The boys played well, both attacking and defending. Errico was very good earning the shutout and we scored three fantastic team goals. We are really looking forward to getting back to Durwood and taking on Northwestern.”

Central Arkansas’ Blake Stricker tallied the first shot of the game in the fourth minute of the match, as a UMKC defender jumped in front to block it. Back-to-back shots by Christian Anderaos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Eric McWoods (St. Louis, Mo.) in the ninth minute began the offensive momentum by the Roos.

In the 20th minute of the match, McWoods sent the ball across the box to a running Alvaro Hernando (Bilbao, Spain), who knocked the ball past the Bears goalkeeper from 11 yards out to put UMKC on the board.

McWoods and Pandelis Popgeorgiev (Budapest, Hungary) combined for five of UMKC’s nine first-half shots, while goalkeeper Filippo Errico (Verona, Italy) grabbed two saves in the opening 45 minutes.

Chris Bellmann (Altdorf bei Nürnberg, Germany) and Eddie Howe (St. Louis, Mo.) would each have a shot blocked, before Anderaos played the ball through Central Arkansas’ defense to McWoods, who chipped the ball over the Bears keeper from 15 yards out to extend UMKC’s lead.

In the closing minutes of the match, a cross pass through the box by McWoods connected with the head of Antoine Precheur (Paris, France), as the sophomore buried the ball to the backside post to seal the 3-0 victory for the Roos.

Errico played a major role in the net for the Roos, registering three saves while collecting his second career shutout.

The Roos boast a 33-24-4 (.574) record at Durwood Soccer Stadium and will look to continue their winning ways on Sunday, Aug. 27 when Northwestern visits Kansas City to kick off a three-game home stand – the longest home stand of the season for UMKC. Kickoff between the Roos and the Wildcats is set for 7 p.m. CT.
