TULSA, Okla. – The UMKC women’s soccer team opened up the regular season Friday evening with a 2-1 loss to Oral Roberts. It was a tough way to kick off the season for the Roos as they came up just short in a game that was well played.
As UMKC worked to set up their offense in the first half, Anna Lillig (Kansas City, Mo.) put on a spectacular display of goalkeeping to maintain a scoreless game. Lillig was credited with ten saves on the night and maintained a calm presence in net.
“Anna played a terrific game and kept us within striking distance throughout the match”, noted head coach Chris Cissell. “The two goals given up were just two very solid goals that she really didn’t have a chance of stopping so overall she played a fantastic game.”
Those two second half goals came at the 49:56 and 64:02 mark for the Eagles, leaving the Roos a limited amount of time to overcome the deficit. Their solid play put UMKC on the scoreboard at the 70:28 mark when Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) delivered the strike to bring the Roos to within one goal.
“Kelsey’s goal was superb, it was a great shot”, commented head coach Chris Cissell. “There were certainly other great looks, we had more corners and were close to even in shots on goal which are both good indications of who is controlling the game”.
The Roos came close to tying the game up on a several occasions following the goal but simply ran out of time to complete the comeback. UMKC edged out Oral Roberts in corner kicks 8-5 and outshot Oral Roberts 12-11 in the second half. Several great passes and lengthy possessions could’ve easily gone the other way on a different night.
“Definitely very proud of the way our girls competed tonight”, noted Cissell. “That’s the way the sport goes sometimes and it’s important to take away the positives, which there were several, after a game like this.”
UMKC is back in action against Oklahoma State on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 1 p.m. CT to wrap up their weekend road stretch.
