KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sunday’s exhibition match didn’t go quite as planned for the UMKC women’s soccer team, as they fell to Big 12 foe Kansas State, 3-0. Despite the score, UMKC played aggressively with high level intensity throughout the entire match.

The Roos set the tone early and placed a considerable amount of pressure on the Wildcats. However, it was Kansas State forward Katie Cramer that opened up the scoring at the 14:16 mark, converting in front of the net off a free kick near the right corner. UMKC continued to push the ball throughout the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net.

“We created several good opportunities, but we need to finish our chances”, commented head coach Chris Cissell. “We felt that it was a pretty even game throughout, except Kansas State capitalized on their opportunities”.

In the second half, the Roos struggled to regain the rhythm that they had in the opening half. UMKC’s best look came from a charging Carly Janike (Lincoln, Neb.), who beat the Wildcat defenders and brought Kansas State’s goalkeeper out of the net at the 50-minute mark, but the keeper came up with the save to keep the Roos off the board.

Kansas State pushed through two more goals in the 57th and 74th minutes of the match to extend their lead by three goals. While UMKC and Kansas State held an even five shots per side at the half, the Roos were outshot 7-3 in a well fought second half.

The attendance at Durwood Stadium for the contest was announced at 466. It was a significant showing of fan support and one that did not go unnoticed.

“What a great atmosphere”, noted Cissell. “We want to thank all the fans for coming out today in what was an excellent learning experience for our players and coaching staff.”

UMKC will open up the regular season with two road contests against Oral Roberts on Friday, Aug. 18 at 7:00 p.m. CT and Oklahoma State on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 1:00 p.m. CT.
