STILLWATER, Okla. – UMKC men's tennis (14-9) fell 4-0 to No. 10 Oklahoma State (22-6) Friday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center in the NCAA Stillwater Regional. The Roos finish a historic season that included the program's first ever Western Athletic Conference championship.
"These guys are why we enjoy the game of tennis," head coach Kendell Hale said. "They never say quit and were always fighting until the end. The score says nothing about how close this match was. These guys are a special group to me and the memories we shared over four years."
In doubles play, Uldis Gaismins (Riga, Latvia) and Amaury Navette (Paris, France) earned a 6-3 victory over Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza on the No. 2 court. Airam Castellano (Gran Canaria, Spain) and Mike Psarros (Athens, Greece) pulled ahead 4-2 in the No. 1 match but ultimately fell 7-6 (7-5) to Julian Cash and Arjun Kadha – the No. 7 tandem in the nation – to clinch the doubles point. Tom Kruse (Flensburg, Germany) and Vinh Pham (Lenexa, Kan.) dropped a 6-0 decision to Artur Dubinski and Tristan Meraut in No. 3 play.
On the singles courts, the Roos fell in straight sets in each match that concluded. Kruse dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Gerch in No. 3 play to clinch the match for the Cowboys. Navette was beaten 6-1, 6-0 by Dubinski in the No. 4 contest. Pham fell 6-3, 6-0 to Finzelberg in the No. 6 matchup.
Castellano was trailing 6-4, 4-1 to Cash in No. 1 play when the match was clinched. Gaismins was down to Kadha by the same score on the No. 2 court. Psarros was down 6-0, 4-3 in No. 5 play.
