UMKC Track and Field Finishes Strong at K.T. Woodman Classic

WICHITA, Kan. – The UMKC track and field team turned in several season best marks and top performances on the final day of the K.T. Woodman Classic on Satruday.

"We are starting to see results from the hard block of training we have done over the past six weeks," commented associate head coach Benaud Shirley. "We are excited for the progress we are making."

On the men’s side, sophomore Darrien Case (Parkville, Mo.) continued his winning ways by finishing first in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.75. In the 400-meter hurdles, Zak Snow (St. Louis, Mo.) and Terrone Garner (St. Louis, Mo.) finished second and third, respectively, with season-best times of 53.57 seconds and 53.66 seconds, respectively.

In the field, Richard Smith (Kansas City, Mo.) came out victorious in the triple jump with a leap of 15.23 meters. Teammate Jeremy Harr (Mukwonago, Wis.) followed closely behind, finishing second with a mark of 15.18 meters. Both performances by the two-student athletes rank them in the top-five all-time at UMKC.

On the women’s side, Remy Abrought (Kansas City, Mo.) finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a wind-aided time of 13.65 seconds. Teammates Mallory Short (Columbia, Mo.) and Jada Steele (Detroit, Mich.) also finished in the top-10 in the event. Hanna Miller (Savannah, Mo.), Janelle Johnson (St. Louis, Mo.), Elizabeth Nolke (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) and Brooke Guiot (Warrensburg, Mo.) took second, third, fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 800-meter run.

Freshman Martana Stemmons (Columbia, Mo.) recorded season bests, personal records and made her way into the top-five all-time performers list at UMKC in the shot put, discus and hammer throw. Christy Nell (Cape Town, South Africa) finished third in the pole vault, clearing a school record mark of 3.52 meters in the event.

The Roos will continue the outdoor slate in Lawrence, Kan., next week at the Kansas Relays. The four-day meet is schedule to begin on Wednesday with five events of the decathlon and four heptathlon events.
