KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC women’s tennis (11-9) competed with an impressive Saint Louis (14-7) team on Thursday afternoon, falling 4-3 at the Plaza Tennis Center. The Roos won two singles matches and claimed the doubles point.

“They’re a strong team,” head coach Kendell Hale said. “This is the closest we’ve ever come to beating them, and that says a lot for their team because we’ve got a very strong team this year. Give them credit, they played well.”

Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) cruised past Mariluz Rojo Domingo in the No. 5 singles match, 6-0, 6-3. Fries is now 10-3 on the season and 6-1 at the No. 5 spot. Marina Albert (Thebes, Egypt) outlasted Ariana Rodriguez on the No. 6 court, 3-6, 6-2, 10-2.

Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) fell 6-2, 6-4 to Aspen Cervin in No. 1 singles. Mariam Kurasbediani (Tbilsi, Georgia) was beaten 6-0, 6-1 in No. 2 play by Verginie Tchakarova. Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Eleonore Tchakarova on the No. 3 court. Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) had her 10-match singles winning streak snapped by Ally McKenzie, falling 3-6, 6-0, 10-4 in the No. 4 contest. Grechkina had not lost in singles since Feb. 12.

In doubles play, Grechkina and Johnson beat the Tchakarova sisters 6-4 in the No. 1 match. The duo improved to 9-6 on the year in No. 1 play. Albert and Ladutska defeated McKenzie and Rojo Domingo 6-3 on the No. 3 court. Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) and Kurasbediani fell 6-1 to Cervin and Rodriguez in the No. 2 contest.

UMKC has earned the No. 1 seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on April 28-30 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

“We’ve put ourselves in a good position,” Hale said. “We’ve just got to back it up. The target is on us now, and everybody is going to be gunning for us, so let’s defend and come away with that championship, the first ever.”
