LAS CRUCES, N.M. – UMKC women’s tennis (7-7, 2-0) beat Chicago State (2-14, 0-2) 7-0 on Sunday morning at the NM State Tennis Center. The Roos won all six singles matches in straight sets and also notched the doubles point.
“The ladies were really purpose-driven, they had a plan and they stuck with it even when faced with adversity,” head coach Kendell Hale said. “They really are seeing their goal and it is pushing them forward.”
Aliona Ladutska (Minsk, Belarus) claimed a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Mariya Kostyuk in No. 1 singles. Melinda Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) beat Lorea Gamboa 6-1, 6-4 on the No. 2 court. Mariam Kurasbediani (Tbilsi, Georgia) won 6-0, 6-1 over Leshia Gadacz in No. 3 action. Yana Grechkina (Vladimir, Russia) defeated Carynne Lloyd 7-6, 7-5. Katie Fries (Overland Park, Kan.) won 6-4, 6-3 against Hanna Pangestu. Thanushree Vale (Chennai, India) topped Judit Aubets 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles action, Johnson and Grechkina beat Lloyd and Gamboa 6-4 in No. 1 play. Kurasbediani and Vale won 6-3 over Pangestu and Gadacz on the No. 2 court. Ladutska and Fries fell 6-4 to Aubets and Kostyuk.
The Roos then return home to play five consecutive matches – including three in conference – at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City to close the regular season slate.
