DENVER – UMKC women’s soccer forward Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) was recognized as the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Offensive Player of the Week by the league office on Monday. The honor marked the second time during the 2018 that Mothershead has received the award.

The Roos played only one match during the week, but Mothershead’s historic performance proved to be enough to secure the weekly league honor. In the Friday night road contest at Big 12 opponent Kansas State, the local product erased an early two-goal deficit by scoring three unanswered goals to seal up a 3-2 victory, the program’s first ever win against a Power-Five opponent.

“I am extremely proud of Kelsey and this is a very well-deserved honor,” commented head coach Chris Cissell. “To score a hat trick on the road against a very talented Big 12 opponent in Kansas State is quite an accomplishment. I’m so proud of Kelsey and the entire UMKC soccer family for the way we played and competed in the match last week.”

Following her second career hat trick, Mothershead currently is tied for the NCAA lead in goals scored with nine on the season, marking a new season-high. Mothershead also ranks second in the NCAA with 19 points, leading the WAC in both goals and points.

With over half a season left in her UMKC career, Mothershead ranks third all-time in program history with 68 career points and 28 career goals. She, along with teammate Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.) who ranks second in career goals and first in career points, will continue their pursuits to leave their mark on the program in significant fashion.

“Kelsey rightfully gets a lot of the credit and recognition by scoring all three goals, but she would be the first one to tell you that her teammates were incredible and put her in a great position to be able to have such great success,” noted Cissell. “Individual honors and awards are only possible when the team and family is enjoying great success.”

The Roos are back in action tonight when they host Creighton for a Monday night contest at Durwood Stadium. The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on the WAC Digital Network.
