KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (14-6) knocked off Maine (2-8) 8-2, its second win of the season over the Black Bears, after falling in the opening game of the Kansas Invitational 8-2 to Southeast Missouri State (13-7) on Friday at Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan.
Maine used a two-run second to tie the game in the fourth, but Garcia scored Macy Hornosky to put the Roos back in front.
Heading into the seventh, UMKC maintained its one run advantage, but broke the game wide open with five runs, with all five coming on big blasts.
Against SEMO, the Redhawks struck first plating three in the fourth inning to take the first lead of the game.
UMKC cut the lead to two in the bottom half of the inning when Chyanne Onstad singled in Garcia.
The Redhawks followed with three more in the fifth and two in the sixth, while the Roos’ final run came when Ashlynn Williams knocked in Thorne in the seventh.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they take on the Black Bears at 10 a.m. and the Redhawks at 12:30 p.m. CT.
