LAWRENCE, Kan. – The UMKC men’s and women’s cross country teams opened up the fall 2018 season at Rim Rock Farm on Saturday with second place finishes. The Roos competed hard on the hot morning, but ultimately came up a little short against the Jayhawks.

“It is always fun to get out and dust the spikes off for the first race of the year, and every race is a chance to grow both physically and mentally”, stated assistant coach Brett Guemmer. “Both teams ran hard, but we are young and learning.”

On the men’s side, freshman Max Selbach had himself a productive day, finishing ninth in the 6k race. “I think he learned a lot and is excited to race again”, stated Guemmer.

The UMKC women’s team was led by senior Mia Jerman, helping the women’s group clock in with a 70 second spread for the entire race. Guemmer had more exciting thoughts on the outing as well.

“This is the closest group of ladies we have ever had”, commented Guemmer. “Like many programs this time of year, we are working through high mileage and tough workouts and the fact that we were able to have a forty second spread from our one to five lineup is pretty good, especially since our number one runner is the defending conference champion.”

Both teams will be putting in hard work for the next month as they will return Lawrence to compete at Rim Rock Farm to face the Jayhawks again at the Rim Rock Farm Collegiate Classic. UMKC took the title last year in this event.
