KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s soccer team (4-2) came up just short in their attempt to record their fourth straight win, falling to Missouri State (5-3) by a final score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Despite outshooting Missouri State 8-3 and claiming a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks during the opening period of action, UMKC found themselves down by a pair of goals entering halftime. The Bears took an initial 1-0 lead on a goal from Emma Skornia at the 14:46 mark before extending their advantage in the 37’ on a score from Kennady Orlick.

The Roos were able to work themselves into several quality looks in the offensive zone throughout the first half but put just two of their shots on goal. A pair of terrific saves from Missouri State goalkeeper Kaitlin Maxwell kept UMKC off the board headed into the break.

After continuing to put the pressure on in the second half of play, UMKC was finally able to break through and find the back of the net. In the 60’, Maxwell left the net to make a play on a loose ball in the box but was unable to safely control it, as Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.) gained possession. Howard calmly sent a touch pass over to teammate Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) who redirected the pass into the net to trim the deficit in half.

Mothershead’s team-leading sixth goal of the season was unfortunately the only scoring the team was able to generate. Maxwell continued to come up with big save after big save to on a number of high percentage shots on goal for the Roos as the match ended in a 2-1 final score. UMKC held a 9-6 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in shots on goal in the second half.

"Today was just not our day and we will learn from this and get better," noted head coach Chris Cissell. "It's obviously disappointing to have taken so many shots and getting a number of shots on goal and come away with just one score but unfortunately that's the way it goes sometimes."

UMKC continues play next week with a road match at Kansas State on Friday, Sep. 7 at 6 p.m. CT before returning to Durwood Stadium the following Monday for a contest against Creighton.
