KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s soccer team (4-1) reeled off their third straight victory on Friday night, taking down Missouri Valley Conference member Drake (1-4) by a final score of 2-0.

Entering the match with a full head of steam after lopsided 4-0 road win over Western Illinois, UMKC completely controlled the pace in the first half of play against Drake. The Roos outshot their opponent 8-2 while also holding a 2-0 edge in shots on goal and a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. Despite the dominant effort, the team was unable to find the back of the net as the match entered half time in a scoreless draw.

“Tonight was another really solid performance from the entire team,” commented head coach Chris Cissell. “We had two senior captains come up with very good goals and top to bottom gave a tremendous effort against a good team that won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship a season ago.”

The Roos would finally break through early in the second half as Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.) shook the net with her second goal of the season at the 49:43 mark. Howard’s goal, coming from well beyond the box, was assisted by Rylan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.) as she picked her team-leading fourth of the year.

Moments later, it was UMKC who would strike once more to extend their lead. Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.) made an impressive run down the field and fired a shot past the keeper into the upper left corner for her first goal of the season.

Two goals proved to be more than enough to secure the team’s third consecutive win, finishing the match by outshooting Drake 16-4 while holding an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. Defense was once again superb for UMKC as they picked up their second shutout in as many games along with allowing just one goal over their past three.

“Offense generally tends to receive most of the headlines but I thought tonight was a fantastic effort defensively,” noted Cissell. “Any time you can hold a team to just one shot on goal, it means you played really well on the defensive line and in the midfield.”

Freshman goalkeeper Afton Fennewald (Lake Winnebago, Mo.) earned the start in net for a second consecutive match and picked up her second career shutout thanks in large part to the stellar Roos defensive unit. Fennewald finished the contest with one save.

The Roos will look to extend their winning streak to four games with a home match at Durwood Stadium against Missouri State (4-3) on Sunday, Sep. 2 at 1 p.m. CT. The contest will be broadcast on the WAC Digital Network in addition to having Live Stats available. Tickets can be purchased through the team’s website or by calling 844-UMKC-FAN.
