Kangaroos Split Matches On Day One Of Omaha Classic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (3-2) split a pair of matches on Friday at the Omaha Classic, falling 3-1 to host Omaha before taking down UTEP 3-1 in the nightcap at Baxter Arena.

Tyrecia Lukes paced the Roos offense, finishing with 13 kills (.632) against the Mavericks and 15 kills (.464) against the Miners, while adding 12 blocks on the day.  Alicia Harrington, meanwhile, recorded 23 kills and 33 digs over the two matches.

In the UTEP match, the Roos quickly fell behind 1-0 after losing the first set, 25-22, but evened the match at one set apiece with second set win.  In the set, the Roos never trailed and broke a 4-4 tie with six straight, including the final point on a kill from Melanie Brecka.  UMKC stretched the lead to as many as nine before taking the set 25-18.

The Roos continued to roll in set three, winning the set 25-16 with Emma Dyer capping the game with a kill from Kynnedy Myers.

UMKC then closed out the match taking the fourth set 25-23.  Kansas City fell behind early 4-0, but battled back to tie it at 6-6.  The score was tied seven more times before Kelsie Milkowski ended the match with a kill from Alli Schomers.

In the opener, meanwhile, the Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead, taking the first set 25-18.  In set two, however, the Roos broke a 10-10 tie with a 5-1 rally to go ahead by four.  Omaha closed back to within on at 20-19, but the final five points went to Kansas City.

The Mavericks, though, claimed the final two sets, 25-23 and 26-24, to take the match 3-1.

On the day, Alex Ratzlaff tallied 11 kills and 26 digs and Brecka added 18 kills.  Rhegan Spiegel, meanwhile, finished with 37 digs, while Myers notched a double-double against the Miners (29 assists, 16 digs).

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT when they take on UIC in their Omaha Classic finale.
