KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Saturday doubleheader between the UMKC softball team (13-39, 2-13 WAC) and South Dakota (17-37, 5-9 Summit) resulted in a pair of losses for the Roos on their 2018 Senior Day.

Five senior student athletes – Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.), Ashlin O'Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.), Sara Miller (Marietta, Ga.), Alyx Bloom (Clay Center, Kan.) and Lynsey Conner (Peggs, Okla.) – were honored in between the two games of the doubleheader to celebrate the culmination of their UMKC softball careers.

For the second straight game, South Dakota jumped on the board early with a pair of runs in the top of the first with a two-run homer off of UMKC starter Lynsey Conner. The Coyotes offense continued to do damage in the second, knocking Conner out of the game after just 1.1 innings in her final regular season start in her UMKC career.

South Dakota put up a massive a seven-run inning in the second to take a commanding 9-0 lead that would ultimately be too much to overcome. Andra O'Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) entered the game in relief of Conner and was excellent in shutting down the opposition, allowing just one run on six hits and 3.2 innings in the circle.

UMKC scored their only two runs in the game on a two-run home run from Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.) in the bottom of the second. The long ball was Byrn’s seventh of the season and gave her 30 runs driven in for the season. The Roos were unable to find anything more in the way of offense as game one ended in five innings with a 10-2 final score.

Game two of the afternoon began as a low-scoring affair before five home runs combined between the teams changed the pace of the contest. After tossing a scoreless top of the first, South Dakota scratched across a run with an RBI single off of Roos starter Sara Miller and another following an error on a stolen base attempt later in the second frame.

Jessica Rogers hit her second home run of the day in the fourth inning to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead before Miller finished her Senior Day start with a line of three runs allowed (two earned) on six hits and strikeout over four solid innings of work. With the UMKC offense still trying to find a rhythm against South Dakota starter Alexis Devers, the Cougars put the game away with a five-run fifth inning.

Goodwin kept the game from ending after five innings with a long home run down the left field line to put the Roos on the board. It was Goodwin’s fifth home run of her senior campaign and gave her a team-leading 31 RBI’s for the year. Her two home runs on the weekend give her 11 for her career, tied for sixth-most in UMKC all-time career history.

Byrn would follow up the solo shot with one of her own, her second homer of the day, in the sixth inning. Her eight home runs for the season leads UMKC and her 31 RBI’s sits tied with Goodwin for the team lead. South Dakota tacked on one more run in the seventh to hand the Roos a 9-2 loss in the regular season finale.

UMKC will head to Las Cruces, N.M., to compete in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament next week. The team’s opening round matchup will be played against Seattle U on Wednesday, May 9 at 8 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on the WAC Digital Network free of charge.
