Beginning with the 2010-2011 season, Kangaroo men’s basketball will join the women’s basketball team in calling UMKC’s Swinney Gym “home court.”

Kangaroo Athletics is excited to make this move, as we strive to build an on-campus home court advantage to win more games and create a better atmosphere. For the 2010-2011 season, Swinney will feature new chairbacked seating, improved concessions and amenities, and easy complimentary parking. There is no better way to enliven student participation while, at the same time, showing off our beautiful campus to the Kansas City community.

Why the move on campus to Swinney?

We need to play a bigger role on campus!

A number of factors have come together at this time to make playing at Swinney the right decision for UMKC. First off, with over 1,500 dormitory beds on campus UMKC needs on-campus activities to build up student spirit. Students showed last year that they would support on-campus basketball and we want to make them our highest priority!

In addition, our current basketball student-athletes prefer to play at home. A packed crowd in front of their fellow students shooting on their home goals gives them the best opportunity to win.

Finally, playing a majority of our games at Swinney will both lower expenses to the Athletics Department and keep those expenses that do remain on campus. In times of budget concern like these, Kangaroo Athletics will save over $150,000 and reinvest the remaining expenses within the university.

What about the seating, parking, concessions, the Kangaroo Club, and other fan amenities?

They’ll be much improved!

New chairback-style seating will be installed between May and June, giving all fans a comfortable environment with a defined seat – no more general admission, and no more bleachers without backs (see the picture below or PDF at the bottom of the page). Parking on campus will continue to be free. All season ticket holders will receive a special pass for the parking lot on the east side of Swinney (bordered by Rockhill Road) for those busier evening games, should you wish to utilize it. In addition, a golf-cart shuttle will run between the parking lots and Swinney to assist any fans in need. A map of parking is located on the back.

A new and improved concessions stand will feature an improved selection along with additional staffing.

A larger Kangaroo Club will feature plenty of room for family and friends as well as the great comraderie you’ve grown to expect. This will be the only location in which to purchase beer and wine.

Can I keep my same seat as I had at Municipal?

Everyone will have a chance to personally pick seats!

The Kangaroo Athletics Scholarship Fund staff will conduct a “Seat Selection” event so that every donor and season ticket holder is able to personally select their new seats at Swinney. This event will be held in August, once the new seating has been installed. You will be mailed and emailed your appointment time to select seats or, should you prefer, our staff can select for you based on your preferences.

What do I have to do next?

Renew now or later, your choice!

We invite you to renew your season tickets and your KASF donation at this time, as those paying during the “Early Bird” period will receive an earlier selection appointment. Should you prefer, you’re welcome to wait to make your payment until after you’ve selected your seats.
