Kansas City, Mo. -- Head Coach Rick Benben announced today that transfers Jimmy Simon and Tyler Schwab have joined the UMKC men’s soccer program from Rutgers University and Marquette University. Both Simon and Schwab will be eligible for the Kangaroos at the start of the 2009 season and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Simon joins the squad after appearing in eight games with three starts at Rutgers last season. The Leavensworth, Kan., native netted one goal out of defender position for the Scarlet Knights, but he will be counted on to move back to the forward position for the ĎRoos in Ď09.
As a prep, Simon was a two-time all-region and all-state selection at Leavenworth High School and he earned NSCAA all-Midwest Region V honors. The four-year starter and two-time team captain finished his career with 42 goals and 18 assists, and he led LHS in scoring in each of his last three seasons.
Simon also played club soccer for the Blue Valley Grasshoppers and Real, where he helped guide the squad to a Kansas State Championship in both 2006 and 2007. Additionally, he also competed for the Kansas ODP team.
“We are very excited to have Jimmy joining our program,” said Benben. “He brings a lot of excellent qualities to our team, as he is a fine soccer player with great athletic ability. We expect him to come in and be a key contributor for our team next season.”
Schwab, a native of Leawood, Kan., returns home to Kansas City after spending two years at Marquette, where he appeared in five games for the Golden Eagles. During his first season in Milwaukee, Schwab received a medical redshirt after missing the year with a shoulder injury.
During the summer of 2008, Schwab trained with the Kansas City Wizards and their reserves, while playing for the Wizards’ Juniors (U-19) squad. As the starting midfielder, Schwab helped the team earn a runner-up finish at the 2008 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Little Rock, Ark. He also helped the squad win the Kansas State Cup and the Midwest regional.
At Blue Valley North High School, Schwab was a first team all-state, all-region, all-metro and all-county selection as a senior. He also earned second team all-league and all-county honors during his junior campaign. Schwab helped guide BVNHS to four district titles, three regional titles, a fourth place state finish as a sophomore and state runner-up showings as a junior and senior. Schwab’s club team - the KCFC Alliance - was also successful, as it won four state cup titles.
“Tyler is an excellent player and we’re very excited to have him joining our program,” said Benben. “Excellent left sided players are hard to come by and we expect Tyler to solidify that position on our team.”
