KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 5 seed UMKC softball team (27-29) saw its season come to a close on Thursday night after a pair of one-run losses on the second day of the WAC Championship in Phoenix, Ariz., at the GCU Softball Complex.
In the day’s opening game, the Roos jumped ahead of top-seeded Seattle U with a trio of long balls over the first three innings of play.
Garcia then led-off the third with a smash to center, while the next batter, Chyanne Onstad, made it a 4-0 game with a homerun to left, giving the Roos back-to-back homeruns.
On the mound, Mia Hoveland limited the Redhawks to just a single unearned run over the first three innings of the game, but Seattle U would add single run in the fourth and two in the sixth to tie the game, before scoring the game winning run in the seventh to take the contest, 5-4.
With the loss, UMKC moved to the loser’s bracket where they squared-off with No. 6 seed CSU Bakersfield.
The two teams would go scoreless over the first two innings, as Kailyn Packard would shut down the Roadrunners, but CSUB broke through for three in the top of the third to take the lead.
Packard, meanwhile, continued to stifle the Runners, but the Roos were unable to capitalize, falling 3-2 and closing out their season.
The Blue & Gold finish the season with 27 wins, tied for the third most in school history.
