KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (25-24, 5-10) dropped a pair of Western Athletic Conference games to New Mexico State (27-19, 9-6) on Saturday night at NM State Softball in Las Cruces, N.M.

In the opener, NMSU scored the first seven runs of the game in the first and looked to be on its way to an easy victory.

The Roos had other ideas, however, as D.J. Cannon belted a two-run homerun in the second scoring Maegan Rollow to cut into the lead.

Sydney Garcia added a solo homerun in the third to make it a four run game, while in the fourth, with the bases loaded, Bre Hunter launched a 2-2 pitch to left field for a grand slam, scoring Garcia, Cannon and Catherine Friloux and tying the game at 7-7.

The Roos were still not done as the took their first lead of the series in the fifth when Madason Shaw scored after Chyanne Onstad was hit by a pitch.

NMSU then answered back with three in the fifth to retake the lead, but Ashley Thorne cut the lead back to one when she scored on an Aggie error.

Two more NM State runs in the sixth pushed the lead back to three, while the Roos seventh inning rally fell short as they could only manage a run from Cannon, who scored on Hunter’s single, her fifth RBI of the contest, making the final score 12-10.

In the late game, NMSU again built an early lead, this time plating six in the second to go ahead 6-0.

Hunter, though, again belted a homerun, this time a three-run shot to center, scoring Garcia and Cannon and cutting the lead in half.

The Aggies answered with two in the third, but UMKC followed with an RBI double from Garcia and RBI single from Hunter bringing the lead back to three.

The Roos, however, managed just one more run, an RBI fielder’s choice from Friloux that scored Faith Willis, while NMSU added three more to take an 11-6 victory.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again Wednesday in Columbia, Mo., when they take on Missouri at 6 p.m. CT.
