DENVER, Colo. --- UMKC women's tennis players Katie Fries and Grace Ball were named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Doubles Team of the Week during last weekend's matches against Saint Louis and Oral Roberts on Apr. 19-20th, the conference announced today.
This is the first award for both players during the 2019 campaign. Competing last weekend at home for the first time together, Fries and Ball recorded a 2-0 outing while helping the Roos deliver back-to-back wins to end the 2019 regular season. Stationed at the No. 3 spot for doubles play, both players posted set scores of 6-4 and 6-4 in the wins over the Billikens and Golden Eagles.
During the season for both players in doubles competition, Fries has recorded six wins while Ball has clinched five victories.
Last year, Fries notched a WAC Singles Player of the Week award early on in the 2018 season, marking the second time in her career she has earned a WAC Player of the Week honor. Fries competed in her last home match as a senior on Saturday versus Oral Roberts.
The Roos, who earned a No. 3 seed in the WAC Tournament this week, head down to Brownsville, Texas, to face off with No. 6 seed Seattle U on Friday, Apr. 26th at 9 a.m. CT. UMKC comes into the tournament as the reigning champions and will look to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row.
