COLUMBIA, Mo. - The UMKC men's golf team improved one position on Day Two and finished sixth out of 15 teams at the Missouri Tiger Invitational Monday through Tuesday at The Club at Old Hawthorne. The Roos collectively stroked a 14-under par 850 (280-288-282) during the three rounds and narrowly lost to third-place and host institution the University of Missouri by five strokes.
Junior McCain Schellhardt finished with his fourth top-five performance of the year with a nine-under par 207 (70-68-69). That effort tied Schellhardt for fifth place, one event removed from claiming the individual championship at the Grand Canyon Invitational, March 15-16. On the par-72 course, Schellhardt pushed his season total to 14 rounds below par after he was sub-par during all three rounds in Columbia, including an event-low 68. He compiled the fourth-most birdies (15) amongst 78 overall golfers, and compiled the fourth-best average (3.77) on all par-four holes.
Sophomore Maxence Catherine was second to the clubhouse for UMKC with a six-under par 210 (70-72-68), which put him tied for 11th overall. He now has gone back-to-back events placing in the top 15 individually, going for seventh (tie) in the previous event at Grand Canyon.
Sophomore Paul Foulquie had the hottest swing with a Roo tournament-low round of 67 on Day 1. Foulquie recorded five birdies, including three in his last six holes, to close out the 67-round. He cooled off to take 21st overall (tie) with a four-under par 212 (67-74-71).
Stefano Mazzoli of TCU won the individual championship with a 17-under par 199 (65-68-66). He defeated the second-place golfer by four strokes. The team title was awarded to 35th-ranked TCU with a three-round score of 824 (267-277-280) for a 40-under par. Kansas State was second with a 33-under par (831).
