Wolverines Pick Up Two Over Roos

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (20-15, 1-5) closed out its WAC series on Saturday with a pair of losses to Utah Valley (10-17, 3-3) at Wolverine Softball Field in Orem, Utah.

The Roos struck first in the opener, plating single runs in each of the first two innings.  Faith Willis knocked in Madason Shaw to get the scoring started, while Sydney Garcia’s triple scored Ashlynn Williams in the second.

UVU claimed its first lead of the game with a run in the third, four in the fourth and three more in the fifth to go ahead 7-2.

UMKC cut the lead to three in the sixth when Shaw scored on Bre Hunter’s fielder’s choice and Chyanne Onstad plated Hunter, but the Roos could get no closer falling 7-4.

In the late game, the Wolverines scored four in the first to grab the early lead, but UMKC cut the deficit in half when Catherine Friloux knocked in Maegan Rollow and Willis with a single to center.

UVU pushed the lead to five with three in the second, but the Roos again answered with a pair of runs, this time when Willis’ triple plated Hunter and Onstad.

The Wolverines added two more runs in the fourth to stretch the lead to 9-4.

In the fifth, Ashley Thorne singled to knock in Rollow and Willis, while in the sixth, Shaw’s homerun knocked in Onstad and cut the lead to one, but the Roos were unable to get any closer as the fell 9-8.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Tuesday when they host Omaha at 5 p.m. CT at Urban Youth Academy.
