KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (20-12) picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday against former league foe Southern Utah (3-20) at Kathryn Berg Field in Cedar City, Utah.
In the opener, the Roos struck first with five in the second, starting when Bre Hunter doubled in Madason Shaw. Faith Willis then singled in Hunter, while Mia Hoveland’s single scored Willis and Maegan Rollow. Alexis D’Ambrosio then scored Hoveland for the fifth run of the inning.
SUU scored a run in the second, but Rollow’s triple to left drove in Hunter and Shaw to push the lead to six.
The Thunderbirds countered with two in the third but UMKC answered when D’Ambrosio singled in Ashlynn Williams for the Roos’ eighth run.
SUU cut the lead to three with single runs in the fourth and sixth, but D.J. Cannon knocked in Rollow for the final run to secure the 9-6 victory.
In the late game, Southern Utah plated three in the bottom of the first, but from there the Roos locked down the home team, holding them scoreless over the final six frames.
UMKC, meanwhile, scored single runs in the second and fourth getting a solo homerun from Willis and an RBI single from Alexis Kump that knocked in Shaw to cut the lead to one.
In the fifth, however, the Roos broke the game wide open with five runs in the inning.
Willis then added her second homerun of the game, this time a two-run shot to right, scoring Rollow.
The Roos continued their scoring ways, scoring a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to make it a 10-3 win.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again this weekend when they resume WAC play at Utah Valley on Mar. 29-30 in Orem, Utah.
