KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (17-12, 0-2) fell in a pair of Western Athletic Conference games to Seattle U (20-12, 2-0) on Friday afternoon at Urban Youth Academy.
Sydney Garcia finished the day with five hits for the Roos, including going a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run in the late game. Chyanne Onstad, meanwhile, finished with a pair of hits in each game.
In the opener, Seattle U jumped ahead early with a single run in the second and pushed the lead to 4-0 with two more in the fourth and one more in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, though, the Roos cut the Redhawks’ lead down to one with a three-run inning.
In the inning, Faith Willis was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on Alexis Kump’s single. Ashlynn Williams then singled to right to drive in Willis. Garcia walked to load the bases and two batters later Onstad scored Kump with a single to right. With the bases still loaded, Bre Hunter walked and Williams scored for the third run.
The lead quickly went back to three in the sixth with two more SU runs, with the Redhawks coming away with 6-3 victory.
In the late game, Garcia led-off the game for the Roos with a solo homerun to right center and Madason Shaw singled in Onstad to make it 2-0 UMKC after one.
Seattle U cut the lead in half with a run in the second and tied the contest in the fourth,
UMKC quickly responded to reclaim the lead when Garcia’s double knocked-in Catherine Friloux.
UMKC, however, was unable to hang on to the lead as Seattle plated three in the top of the seventh to come away with the 5-3 victory.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they wrap-up the series against the Redhawks at 10 a.m. CT at the UYA.
