KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sydney Garcia finished 3-of-5 with two runs, a double and an RBI the day after her 21st birthday, but it was not enough as the UMKC softball team’s (17-10) late comeback fell short against South Dakota State (21-7) in a 10-8 extra inning loss on Sunday at the Urban Youth Academy.

UMKC struck first in the contest when Bre Hunter doubled in Chyanne Onstad and Alexis D’Ambrosio to make it 2-0.

The Roos pushed the lead to three in the second when Onstad singled in Garcia, but SDSU answered with six in the top of the third to take the lead.

Faith Willis’ RBI single, scoring Madason Shaw, cut the deficit to two, but two more from the Jacks pushed the lead back to four.

UMKC would go scoreless over the next two frames, but a four spot in the sixth sent the game to extra innings.

In the sixth, Garcia singled in D.J. Cannon, who was pinch running for Mia Hoveland, while Onstad’s double plated Garcia.  Hunter’s sac fly then scored D’Ambrosio, while Shaw’s double to right center knocked in Onstad for the final run.

The comeback, however, fell just short as SDSU scored two in the eight to secure the victory.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Friday when they open up Western Athletic Conference play against Seattle on Mar. 22 at 5 p.m. at UYA.
