PHOENIX, Ariz.
– For the first time since winning the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championship last year, the UMKC men's golf team claimed first place at the Grand Canyon University Invitational that ended Saturday (March 16) at the GCU Championship Golf Course. The Roos took top honors out of an 18-team field by firing a 23-under par, 829 (282-271-276). It’s the first team title since April 25, 2018 when UMKC won its fourth overall conference championship.

Junior McCain Schellhardt, a 2018 All-WAC First Team selection, tied for first individually with an 8-under par, 205 (69-68-68). The effort was his second career win, with the other coming at the 2018 WAC Championships. Over the weekend, he tied for the second most birdies with 15 and claimed an eagle on the par-5, hole No. 10 during round two.

"I’m so proud of these guys! They just keep improving every week,” said UMKC men's golf coach J.W. VanDenBorn. "I challenged them after our performance in Laredo (last week) and they responded in some challenging conditions.

“McCain obviously had a great week after starting the tournament five-over through the opening nine. But this was as good a team win as we could have asked for. Everyone put themselves in position to contribute and did just that.”

The 205 carded by Schellhardt is the lowest for a UMKC golfer since senior Francois Lagraulet recorded a 201 at the Ram Masters Invitational from Sept. 18-19, 2017. Lagraulet would eventually finish 14th (tie) in the GCU invitational, thanks to a UMKC-low round of 67 in round two, with a 210 (75-67-68).

Behind Schellhardt’s performance, sophomore Max Catherine tied for seventh overall with a 5-under par 208 (71-68-69). Sophomore Vitek Novak was 4-under par 209 (70-68-71). Taylor Larsen competed as an individual and was even-par 213 (73-70-70). Sophomore Paul Foulquie shot a +3-over par 216 (72-71-73).

“Foulquie was probably as impressive as anyone this week,” said VanDenBorn. “He did not have his game this week and found a way to put scores up to help the team if someone slipped. I’m very proud of his effort.

“Overall, the team was so patient today and hung tough through the difficult stretch at the end of the front nine. We played the back nine well all week and they did it again today under pressure. We made some really key par saves to keep the round together.”

Fellow WAC member UT Rio Grande Valley took No. 2 in the event, finishing with a 9-under par 843 (285-275-283).

Schellhardt tied with Columbia’s Derek Kim for the top individual position.
