KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (15-8) picked up its third ever win over Kansas (5-17), 5-4 in 8 innings, on Sunday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan., in the Kansas Invitational finale.

Previously the Roos have beaten the Jayhawks by 2-1 margins in both 2002 and 2011.

UMKC jumped on KU early in the contest after Chyanne Onstad hit a two-run blast to left, knocking in Alexis D’Ambrosio.

Kansas cut the lead in half with a single run in the third, but UMKC quickly responded with two more in the fifth when Sydney Garcia and Macy Hornosky each crossed the plate.

The Roos kept the Jayhawks off the board in the bottom half of the inning, but the Jayhawks plated three in the sixth to tie the game and, after a scoreless seventh, send the contest to extra innings.

In the eighth, UMKC quickly regained the advantage when D’Ambrosio moved to third, after being placed on second to start the inning, on Bre Hunter’s bunt single and came around to score on a KU passed ball.

Kailyn Packard then locked down the Jayhawks in the bottom half of the inning to seal the win for UMKC.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Friday when they host Creighton at the Urban Youth Academy at 3:30 p.m. CT on Mar. 12.
