KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC’s lone senior Aleer Leek scored a season-high 11 points as the UMKC men’s basketball team (10-20, 5-10) dropped a heartbreaker 75-70 in a Western Athletic Conference contest to UTRGV (18-14, 9-6) on Saturday night at Swinney Center in the penultimate regular season contest.
“Aleer played a heck of a game tonight,” Head Coach Kareem Richardson said. “It was his best of the season, unfortunately we couldn’t send him out on a high note. Down the stretch, we weren’t able to get stops or baskets and came up just a little short.”
In the game Leek added four rebounds, a block and a steal, while Brandon McKissic led the team with 20 points. Rob Whitfield was the final Roo in double figures, finishing with 16 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals.
In the opening half, the Roos jumped out to an 11-7 lead and, after UTRGV grabbed their first lead of the contest at 12-11, stretched the lead to 11 with 12 straight points, getting threes from Danny Dixon, Jordan Giles, McKissic and Whitfield during the rally.
UMKC would go on to stretch the lead to as many as 12, before heading into the locker room with a 10-point advantage at 40-30.
UMKC maintained its lead throughout the second half, again stretching its lead to a game-high 12 with just over six minutes remaining in the contest.
The Roos continued to lead until the 1:46 mark when the Vaqueros tied the game at 68-68.
The score would remained tied at 70-70 with just over a minute left, but the Roos would come up empty down the stretch to fall 75-70.
· UMKC returns to action for the final game of the regular season on Saturday when they head to Chicago, Ill., to take on Chicago State on Mar. 9 at 2 p.m. CT.
· UMKC shot 50.0% (6-12) from three-point range.
· The Roos forced 10 UTRGV turnovers, scoring 12 points off them.
· The Roos scored 22 points in the paint.
· UMKC led for 36:43 in the game.
