KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (13-4) continued its hot start to the 2019 season with victories over Maine and Abilene Christian on Friday night at Poly Wells Field in Abilene, Texas.
In the opener against the Black Bears, the Roos picked up the 7-0 victory after a gem on the mound by Mia Hoveland, who tossed all seven innings, allowing just two hits, with no walks and eight strikeouts in the shut out.
Madason Shaw powered the UMKC offensive output, finishing 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
Shaw got the scoring started in the second when her single to right knocked in Ashlynn Williams. Shaw then came around to score on a Maine error.
Bre Hunter’s two-run triple in the fourth scored Sydney Garcia and Shaw to make it 6-0, while the final run of the game for the Roos game in the fifth when Shaw knocked in Catherine Friloux with a double down the rightfield line.
In the nightcap, UMKC downed the host Wildcats, 8-2.
The Roos jumped ahead early, putting up a single run in the top of the first when Hunter homered to left center.
Rollow followed with her second homerun of the day in the second to make it 2-0, while later in the inning Shaw’s double plated Williams to push the lead to three.
ACU scored its first run in the third, but during the fourth Shaw singled in Rollow, Kailyn Packard scored on a wild pitch and Williams scored on Garcia’s fielder’s choice.
Abilene Christian added another run in the bottom half of the inning, but UMKC put the game away in the fifth when Packard singled in Rollow and Garcia singled in Packard.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow against the Wildcats and Black Bears starting at noon CT.
