IOWA CITY, Iowa. – The UMKC men’s tennis team (2-4) lost a close match to Iowa, 4-3, on Friday afternoon in the team’s second contest of the week.

Looking at a chance to take down a power five conference foe, the Roos would fall short in both the doubles and singles competitions versus the Hawkeyes.

In the No. 1 spot in the doubles round, Diego Giraldo and Ben Stride would pull through for UMKC with a 6-3 set victory. However, the Roos would fall in the No. 2 and 3 spots, losing the doubles point to Iowa in the process.

Moving on to the singles competitions, junior Tom Kruse would face off with the 89th ranked player in the country in Kareem Allaf in the last competition of the day. Kruse would send the break to the third set before falling 6-2 and giving the Hawkeyes the win on Friday afternoon.

Stride, Giraldo and Hunter Clark would each pull out victories in the No. 2, 3 and 5 spots for UMKC in singles play.

The Roos now sit at 2-4 on the year and 1-1 on this road trip.

“Our guys really played well today,” stated assistant coach David Heckler. “Courts two and three got off to a slow start in doubles which ultimately ended with both of them losing their matches. After losing the doubles point, the guys recovered quickly to go up sets on two, three and five.”

Heckler would go on to elaborate on Tom Kruse’s last set on Friday.

“Unfortunately Tom got broken down at deuce in his first service game and Iowa’s number one guy stepped up and closed out the match,” commented Heckler. “Really proud of the way our guys competed. We seem to be shaping up well to be going into conference play in a few weeks.”

Up Next: UMKC will remain on the road and travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to face off with Arkansas on Saturday, Feb. 16th at 5 p.m. CT.
