KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s volleyball team held its annual team banquet last Sunday, Feb. 3rd in the UMKC Student Union to wrap up the 2018 season.

Head coach Christi Posey, assistant coach Trent Jones and assistant coach Will McCall welcomed many friends and family members of the 2018 squad which won 21 games and posted an 11-5 record in conference play. The league wins were the most since the 2014 season when the Roos recorded a 12-2 Western Athletic Conference record.

In attendance for the event was Director of Athletics Dr. Brandon Martin, Deputy Athletics and SWA Ursula Gurney, Assistant Athletics Director of Compliance Randy Krahulik and Assistant Director of Academic Support Amelia Howard.

During the 2018 season, junior Rhegan Spiegel recorded her 1067th dig in her career and was presented with a “Game Ball”. Spiegel sits eighth all-time with 1067 digs in UMKC history. The seniors each received a framed jersey for their contribution and commitment to the UMKC Volleyball program.

After a brief opening statement, Posey introduced Dr. Martin who welcomed the group to the banquet.  He shared his vision for UMKC Athletics and provided an update on his work to deliver a meaningful and positive student-athlete experience.  Martin has worked tirelessly to raise money for the department ever since he arrived on campus Jan. 6.

The program began with recognizing and thanking the Academic Support staff during the fall season. Howard listed the Academic Award winners and handed out the WAC Academic Honor Roll Certificates.

Moving on to the annual season recap, Posey gave an overview of the year with a new twist.

“From how far the team had come from the spring of 2017 and how the team needed a ‘Roo Boot’, the 2018 theme for us was ‘Kangaroo Construction, Building Champions’,” stated head coach Christi Posey.

Posey took the audience down memory lane sharing coaching perspectives, significant game statistics and some humorous encounters on the year. She finished the speech with a reminder of the unfinished goal of winning the WAC Tournament title and punching the ticket to the NCAA Tournament by elevating the workload both physically and mentally of the players.

Posey expressed her hope for the returning players to understand that their time is now and to value the opportunity to grow into leaders.

“My hope for you seniors is that you appreciated the lessons athletics has taught you and that you embraced the struggles as much as the triumphs,” stated Posey. “Because in those moments, you will develop the grit and determination that life requires of us to get to where we want to be.”

The banquet was concluded with a 2018 highlight video produced by assistant coach McCall.  Each family member received a yearbook from the team for their constant support for the program.
