KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (3-2) completed a successful weekend trip to Rosemont, Ill., for the Total Sports Control Invitational with a 9-1 victory over Western Illinois (3-2) on Sunday at the Rosemont Dome.
The Roos 5-8 hitters combined to go 7-of-11 with six runs, seven RBIs, a triple and a stolen base. In the group, Maegan Rollow finished 2-for-3 with three runs, an RBI, a triple and a stolen base, Lia Lombardini went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, Catherine Friloux finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run and Alexis Kump went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Western Illinois got on the board with their lone run in the first, but UMKC plated three in the bottom of the second inning when Lombardini and Rollow scored on a single from Friloux, while Friloux came around to score on Kump’s single to right.
UMKC made it 4-1 in the fourth after Rollow singled, stole second, advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a groundout by Kump.
In the fifth, the Roos busted the game open when Alexis D’Ambrosio scored on a double from Chyanne Onstad and McKenzie Harrish and Onstad scored on Lombardini’s single. Rollow’s triple then scored Lombardini, while Friloux’s single to right scored Rollow and ended the contest.
On the mound, Mia Hoveland tossed all five innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out two to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Overall, seven of the nine Roo starters garnered hits in the contest.
In the tournament, the Roos outscored their opponents 31-8.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Friday at 8 a.m. CT when they open up play at the Eagle Round Robin in Statesboro, Ga., against Mount St. Mary’s.
