KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (1-1) opened up the season on a high note as the Roos shutout Detroit (0-1), 9-0, in dominating fashion, before falling to Loyola-Chicago (1-0), 1-0, in the late game on the season’s opening day at the Rosemont Dome in Rosemont, Ill.

In the opening tilt against the Titans, DJ Cannon (1-0) got the opening nod and proceeded to dominate from the first batter, as she allowed just two baserunners, a dropped third strike in the third and a fifth inning two-out single, while striking out six batters over six innings.  Kailyn Packard, also making her UMKC debut, then finished off the game with a perfect seventh that included a pair of punchouts.

Offensively, the Roos No. 1 and No. 2 hitters each tallied two hits, as Sydney Garcia finished 2-for-4 with a run and Alexis D’Ambrosio went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, a double and a walk.

Lia Lombardini and Maegan Rollow, meanwhile, each scored twice for the Roos, while Madason Shaw knocked in a pair.

Overall, seven of the nine Roo starters collected hits and eight of the nine reached base.

The Roos struck first with a three-run third when D’Ambrosio’s double down the rightfield line scored Garcia and Faith Willis, while D’Ambrosio came around to score on a Detroit error.

Two innings later, the Roos tacked on four more with Rollow singling in D’Ambrosio, Shaw plating two with a single and one coming on a UDM error, making it 7-0 in favor of UMKC.

The final two UMKC runs came in the seventh inning, as Lombardini scored on an error and a single by Alexis Kump scored Rollow.

In the late game, the Roos fell 1-0 at Loyola.  Pitching again reigned for UMKC as Mia Hoveland tossed 4.0 innings, allowing just four hits and one run with a strikeout, while Packard again came on in relief and gave up just one hit in two innings of work.

The Roos garnered two hits in the contest with Catherine Friloux and Shaw each collecting singles.

The Ramblers, meanwhile, scored their run in the second on a two-out double.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow when they take on IUPUI at 9 a.m. CT and DePaul at 2 p.m. CT on the second day of play.
