KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After recording the second most wins in school history and picking up a quarterfinal victory in the WAC Tournament, the UMKC volleyball (21-11) season came to a close on Friday night in Bakersfield, Calif., after a 3-1 loss to New Mexico State (23-8) at the Icardo Center.
Melanie Brecka led the Roos in the loss with 11 kills, hitting .321 with three digs and two aces. Alex Ratzlaff, meanwhile, had nine kills, eight digs and an ace and Brooke Jacobs finished with six kills and six blocks.
In the match, the Roos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead taking the first set with a dominating 25-15 win. The score was knotted early at 10-10 after a kill from Tyrecia Lukes. Rhegan Spiegel followed with back-to-back aces and, three points late,r two straight kills from Brecka made it 16-12. The Roos allowed just three more points the rest of the way, while Ratzlaff finished the set off for UMKC with the final four points on three kills and the set-ending ace.
The Aggies quickly tied the match at one set apiece with a 25-21 win. The Roos trailed early, but came back to take a 19-18 lead after back-to-back kills from Ratzlaff and Emma Dyer. NMSU, however, was too strong and came away with the win.
New Mexico State then followed with a 25-22 third set win, scoring the final three points of the set and claimed the match with a 25-15 win in set four.
Lukes recorded five kills and six blocks and Alicia Harrington added five kills, seven digs and an ace. In the back row, Spiegel recorded nine digs with five assists and Dyer had six kills and a block.
The Roos lose three impact seniors for next season, but will return five starters and their libero, including all three All-WAC performers.
