KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (19-8, 10-3) notched a 3-1 win on Thursday night over WAC foe Utah Valley (14-12, 6-7) at the Swinney Recreation Center, its sixth straight victory.

Alicia Harrington and Alex Ratzlaff paced the Roos in the contest as each notched double-doubles.  Harrington finished with 16 kills, hitting .379, 20 digs, two assists, an ace and a block, while Ratzlaff tallied 16 kills, hitting .233, with 15 digs, an ace, an assist and a block.

In the opening set, the Roos scored the first three points, with Brooke Jacobs opening with a kill.  Back-to-back kills from Jacobs and Harrington then made it 5-2, but UVU closed to within one at 7-6.  UMKC, though, would hold the lead and stretch it to a set-high five at 18-13 on two of Harrington’s seven first set kills and one from Melanie Brecka.  The Wolverines had one final run, closing to 23-21, but a kill from Tyrecia Lukes and a Ratzlaff ace sent UMKC to a 25-21 victory.

UMKC then pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 25-22 second set win.  The two squads were tied at 8-8 early, but a 9-2 run by the Roos featuring two kills each from Ratzlaff and Lukes and one each from Jacobs and Harrington, as well as aces from Alli Schomers and Spiegel put Kansas City ahead 17-10.  UVU would fight back and close to within two at 24-22, but Lukes put the set away with her fourth kill.

The Wolverines would cut the lead in half with a 25-22 third set win, but the Roos took the match with a 25-23 win in set four.  In the fourth set, UMKC started fast, scoring eight of the first nine points, with Ratzlaff kills accounting for the first three.  Utah Valley, however, fought all the way back to tie the set at 21-21, but two UVU errors and two more Ratzlaff kills down the stretch gave UMKC a 25-22 set win and a 3-1 match win.

For the Roos, Brecka registered 10 kills and four blocks, Jacobs notched seven kills and seven blocks, Lukes tallied seven kills and seven blocks and Dyer recorded three kills and seven blocks.

Setting up the offense, Schomers finished with 28 assists, three digs, two aces and two kills and Kynnedy Myers added 21 assists and 12 digs for the Roos third double-double.  Rhegan Spiegel, meanwhile, finished with a team-high 22 digs.
