KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC women’s soccer team (13-3, 5-0 WAC) scored both goals of the match against Grand Canyon (5-12, 2-3 WAC) in the final 15 minutes of play to pick up their sixth consecutive win and fifth victory in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play on Sunday.
While the final score made the contest appear to be a tightly contested battle, UMKC dominated the action throughout all 90 minutes of play but were unable to capitalize until the closing stretch of the match. In what was a complete effort on both ends of the field by the Roos, the team registered 31 shots while limiting GCU to just one shot for the day.
“We are very happy with our performance today and certainly feeling good about picking up our sixth straight victory and improving to 5-0 in the WAC,” commented head coach Chris Cissell. “Anytime you can have such a large in advantage in shots and limit an opponent to just one is something we are proud of.”
Additionally, the team held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks as they continued to press forward with their attack. Rylan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.), Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.) and Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) each filled the stat sheet offensively, all finishing with multiple shots on goal and combining to take a total of 17 shots in the match.
Entering the 77’ of play, the match remained deadlocked in a scoreless draw until Howard came through with her eighth goal of the season. Set up by a nice pass into the box by Childers, the senior forward redirected the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to give UMKC a 1-0 lead. The score, which would serve as the game-winner, marked two consecutive games in which Howard has found the net. Amanda Sampson (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) was also credited with an assist on the score.
Moments later, the Roos would tack on another goal to seal the victory. In another brilliant display of passing by the team, Howard would find an uncovered Abby Small (Kansas City, Mo.) inside the box, where Small delivered with her second of goal of the season. The assist was Howard’s 10th of the season.
The Roos will play in their final road trip of the 2018 season next weekend as they look to keep their unblemished conference record intact. The team will travel to square off with Utah Valley on Friday, Oct. 19 before taking on Seattle U on Sunday, Oct. 21 in the final road contest of the year.
